Piano Music Books That I Recommend

Picking piano music books can be a daunting task as there are so many of them, good and bad so I find the best way to go about it is to ask people that have been learning or teaching piano for a number of years, rather than going to your local music store and browsing through all those books on the shelves.

Anyone that's gone through a lot of piano music books will be able to give you some good recommendations. That's also where this page comes in, here I'll give you my top piano books with some comments to tell you what they're about, I'll keep adding books as I update the page so if you have any favourites of your own then go to the contact page and let me know so that I can include them here.

The Jazz Piano Book
by Mark Levine
This book is by far the best book on learning jazz piano that I know of, it has over 300 pages with chapters on Intervals and triads, it will get you reading chord charts and understanding all about how music works, if you do a search on the internet for this book you'll come across lots of reviews and comments from other jazz pianists too.

The Pop Piano Book
by Mark Harrison
This book is a great one for all the contemporary styles, pop, rock, RnB, funk, new age, Country and gospel, it's all about learning the styles so there aren’t any full pieces in the book but it has nearly 800 music examples to get you started.

The Library Of Piano Favourites
Amsco Publications
This book has so many great pieces in it, classical and popular. You'll find pieces from every era from classical and romantic to ragtime and blues. When ever I feel like playing something familiar or just want to relax at the piano for a bit I like to pick this book up and play through the pieces.

What are YOUR favourite piano books?

Do you have any great piano books that you know of, that you'd like to share with everyone, or maybe some that you think we should stay away from. Maybe you'd like to write a review on it!

Bastien Piano Basics  starstarstarstarstar
Bastien piano basics is a great series of books that takes the young learner right from the beginning to an intermediate stage. I can't recommend them ...

Terrific blend of clear explanation, cool tunes, and audio CD accompaniment.
